Natoma FFA Wins District Events

On October 12th, 2016, thirteen members of the Natoma FFA chapter headed out early in the morning en route for district career development events hosted in the far northwest corner of the state.  Bird City was the destination, and the events included Milk Quality & Products, Dairy Cattle Judging, and Food Science.  By the end of the day, the Natoma Senior and Greenhand teams combined to bring home two 1st place plaques, two 3rd place plaques, and ten individual medals.

In the Milk Quality & Products event was held in the newly renovated Legion Hall in downtown Bird City.  It should be noted that the facilities were great and included a large kitchen perfect for the set-up and running of the contest.  The Greenhand and Senior teams both reaped the benefit of hard work and studying by taking 1st place.  On the Greenhand side, Shayne Engling brought home the 1st place individual medal and Vaughn Stull was 2nd.  Jacob Murphy rounded out the top placers with a 7th place finish.  Other contributing greenhand team members were Shandra Griffin and Dakota Howard.  The Senior team, who took 3rd as a team at the state event in Manhattan last May came in with high expectations, and they did not disappoint. James Maupin was 1st individually, Taitem Zeigler took 2nd, Grady Dickerson placed 3rd, Sonny Gridley was 7th, and Dylan Pruter was 23rd out of a field of 72 contestants.

The Food Science event was run simultaneously with Milk Quality, so the same Natoma FFA members competed.  The senior team also added Austin Murphy to its ranks.  At the end of the day it was Grady Dickerson taking 7th individually in the Senior division.  James Maupin was 11th and Taitem Zeigler was 12th.  The team took 3rd.  The Greenhand high placer was Shandra Griffin in 21st, and Vaughn Stull was close behind in 22nd.

The Dairy Cattle Judging Senior team was represented by Grady Dickerson, Erika George, Kaylee Anglin, and Austin Murphy who placed 8th, 21st, 35th, and 38th respectively.  The senior team took home 5th place. The Greenhand team performed very well with leading members Vaughn Stull, placing 2nd, and Shayne Engling, placing 11th. Shandra Griffin, Jacob Murphy, and Dakota Howard also represented the Greenhand Team which placed 3rd collectively.

A big thanks goes out to the FFA’s bus driver for the day, Bill Murphy, who put in 6 hours of drive time and guided us safely to Bird City and home that evening.
