Skip image

The Natoma FFA traveled to Bird City, KS on Wednesday, October 17th to compete in the Northwest District FFA Dairy Cattle Judging career development event. Greenhand members Ashton Lund, Braydon Hays, and Derek Geroge competed in their first judging event at the high school level. Austin Thomson, Natoma FFA Treasurer, competed in the senior division. 21 FFA chapters competed in the greenhand division with 125 FFA members. The senior division had 19 teams, with 96 members competing.

The cattle for the event were provided by McCarty Family Farms, who milk approximately 8,000 head of dairy cattle on three farms in Kansas and one in Nebraska. One of those farms opened in 2007 and is located just east of Bird City. McCarty Family Farms holds a contract with Dannon, so all of their milk is processed for use in yogurt products.

The Natoma FFA had a great day overall, with the Greenhand team placing 6th. Derek George was 3rd and Ashton Lund was 4th individually. Braydon Hays ranked in the top 25 for placings score in the division as well.

Upcoming events for the Natoma FFA chapter include National Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 23rd - 27th, Greenhand Conference at Northern Valley November 5th, and Milk Quality & Products/Food Science at Russell on November 15th. Follow the Natoma FFA on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
