The annual Christmas Concert for the Elementary school was held on December 14, in the NES gym. Arla Homburg, Preschool-12 vocal instructor, and Bonnie Schamberger, 5-12 band instructor conducted the presentations. The Preschoolers started off the program wearing Santa hats and singing “Must Be Santa”. The Kindergarten then joined to make Santa’s Rhythm Band. While the Preschool and Kindergarten played drums, and other instruments the 5th and 6th grade Honor Choir were the vocalists for the song, “It’s Beginning to look like Christmas.”
Other songs that the Kindergarten Choir sang were two favorites: “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Johnny Marks, and “My Two Front Teeth” by Don Gardner. The Kindergarten dressed in theme by wearing antlers for “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The 1st and 2nd grade were combined together to sing “Old Man Winter” which was appropriate as the winter weather was very cold. 6th grader Gracyn Miller accompanied playing her flute. The audience received a special treat from the 1st and 2nd grade as they performed “Snowflake Carol” and “St. Nick,” these were partner songs that combine two songs in one and make beautiful harmony.
The North Pole Recorders dressed in Santa hats and scarves, consisted of the 3rd and 4th grade. They played fun songs such as “Deck the Halls,” “O Christmas Tree,” and “Fum Fum Fum”. Their choir selections were “Christmas Day is on his way,” and “Happy Holiday/White Christmas.” The 4th and 5th grade band performed the songs “Christmas Cheer” by Ed Huckeby, “Jolly Old St. Nick” arranged by Hal Leonard, and “Hard Rock Blues” by John Higgins. “Hot Chocolate,” which was sung by the 5th and 6th Grade Chorus was a fun selection as they did cute choreography using Styrofoam cups.
Next on the agenda was the KMEA Select Honor Choir. Students that were chosen for KMEA were 5th graders Grady Dickerson, Terran Homburg, and Taitem Zeigler, 6th graders Regan Casey, August Homburg, and Gracyn Miller. The alternates for KMEA are 5th graders Kayley Chrisler, Sarah Pelton, and Dylan Pruter, 6th graders Doran Griffin and Dean Masters. They performed the song “Amani Utupe” (Grant Us Peace, Give Us Courage) arranged by Simms. Kayley Chrisler and Terran Homburg performed a clarinet duet to the song “Deck the Halls” arranged by Old Welsh Air.
The 6th grade band then took the stage and played the songs “Theme From Imperial March” where the 6th grade marched in with light-savers, “Concerto for Drum Pads” where the 4th and 5th grade band joined in to play the drum pads, “A Suite for old St. Nick,” where Riley Chrisler played the trap set, and “New ‘Twist’ to Jingle Bells,” where the trap set was played by August Phlieger.
5th and 6th grade chorus performed the songs, “Come Follow the Star,” and “Dance, Dance, Dance” arranged by Strid. A low brass trio, which consisted of Superintendent Aaron Homburg, along with his son, August Homburg, and Dean Masters, performed the Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” The last selection for the evening was the 5th and 6th grade chefs dressed in colorful chef hats and festive aprons, they sang the song “Fruitcake.” The 20 cooks proceeded to create a holiday fruitcake with creative props and ingredients. It was another successful year for the Elementary Winter Concert, and everyone departed feeling the Christmas spirit.
