Scholarships & Deadline Announcements
 

Washburn University

Washburn University; located in Topeka, Kansas; provides broadly-based liberal arts and professional education through more than 190 certificate, associate, baccalaureate, master's and juris doctor programs through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Law, Business, Nursing and Applied Studies.

Washburn will also be hosting several senior days in November.  The Senior Days are as follows:  Friday, November 2, Friday, November 16 and Friday, November 30

Washburn University offers several scholarships.  One of these is The Garvey Scholarship, which is a renewable scholarship for 4 years to attend the University.  Recipients are selected each year based on the results of the Garvey exam.  You must a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and complete the steps listed in order to take the exam.  Students must register for the Garvey exam and turn in to the Washburn University Office of Admissions:  1) Application for admission   2) $20 application fee   3) Official high school transcripts   4) ACT scores (either sent from your high school or ACT)

Barton County Community College (Presidential Scholarship) (Great Bend)
Eligibility: Nominated by Ms. Murphy on the basis of academics, leadership, community and school involvement, and good citizenship.
Amount: $500 performance award per semester (total = $1,000).
Requirements: attend monthly meeting during your attendance at BCCC and maintain a 3.5 GPA to retain the award.
Application: See Ms. Murphy if seriously interested in Barton County.
Deadline: I have to have my nomination in by November 30th. If you are seriously interested, see Ms. Murphy ASAP

SAE Engineering Scholarship
Eligibility: Intend to enroll in an engineering program accredited by ABET http://www.abet.org 
Be a high school senior and citizen of the U.S., meet minimum requirements with regard to GPA, SAT and or ACT scores as outlined in the individual scholarship descriptions (Descriptions are located on the SAE website at www.sae.org/students/unscholr.htm 
Special note: go to the SAE website for more info and a listing of requirements and check out which scholarship you would like to apply for.

Toyota Community Scholars Program
One student is selected from each high school based on outstanding academic leadership, be active in school programs, be recognized as a leader by his/her peers and instructors, and dedication to community service.

Fort Hays State University Music Scholarships
FHSU music dept. wants students to know that they provide scholarships to majors and non-majors. Students who participate in the FHSU Marching Band and /or Basketball Pep Band earn stipends. These awards are in addition to Music Awards of Excellence and other scholarships. Kansas State University Civic Leadership Scholarship


The K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship competition identifies and rewards exceptional high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to serving others in their community, school, and place of worship.

Benefits: 
First Place:  $4,000 scholarship to attend K-State freshman year and the opportunity to participate in civic leadership activities and Introduction to Leadership Concepts class
Second Place:  $2,500 scholarship to attend K-State freshman year and the opportunity to participate in civic leadership activities and Introduction to Leadership Concepts class
Third Place:  $2,000 scholarship to attend K-State freshman year and the opportunity to participate in civic leadership activities and Introduction to Leadership Concepts class
    Scholarship recipients may renew the scholarship with a 3.33 cummulative K-State gpa for up to 3 additional years as a Wicks Civic Leadership Scholar

AXA Foundation Scholarship (National)
Eligibility: The recipients are well rounded students who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family and community.  This is a very demanding scholarship competition!
Award: (1) winner from each state. The state winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship. (10) National winners with $15,000 scholarship.

Burger King Scholars
Eligibility: Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year. Demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities. Demonstrate financial need. Receive written recommendations from employer and school official. Plan to attend an accredited 2 or 4 year school in the fall of 2008.
Amount: over 2,000 scholarships of ($1,000) awarded nationally and in Puerto Rico and Canada.
Deadline: Postmarked by Dec. 15th

***NEW*** National Wild Turkey Federation Scholarship
Requirements:  Senior with a 3.0 GPA
Criteria:  Students must pursue a degree from an accredited post-secondary institution, support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports, school involvement with activities, demonstrate leadership, community involvement, have a current hunting license.
Amount: Local Winner= $250; State=$1,000; National=$10,000
Each local winner will receive $250 from the State and the local will match it for a total of $500

***NEW***VFW Endowment Scholarship
Eligibility:  Graduating H.S. Senior or current college student
Criteria:  Have an active parent or grandparent in the VFW and provide the VFW Post number or Ladies Auxiliary number, show strong extra-curricular involvement, have demonstrated community involvement, and solid academics
**Family financial status is crucial and you must provide financial information.
Award:  $500-$2,000
Application: You may get a copy of the application by going to http://www.ksvfw.org or you may get an application from Ms. Murphy
Deadline:  To be submitted to Topeka by February 1, 2008. Local application to be submitted by January 1, 2008.  See Ms. Murphy for Application.

K-State Salina offers ELITE (Enhancing Lives Through Technology and Engineering) Scholarship

K-State at Salina's Engineering Technology Department received a National Science Foundation Scholarship grant to span over the next four years.  The goal is to provide tuition assistance for Kansas students for successful completion of an associate or bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology.  The programs options include:  Construction Engineering Technology, Web Development, Computer Systems Technology, Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology.

American Legion- National High School Oratorical Contest
Each Year Kansas awards $2,400 as follows—the winner (state) receives a $1,500 scholarship when he/she represents Kansas in the National finals contest. The next 3 places in Kansas receive $500, $250, and $150 in scholarships.
Topics: Are assigned as follows from the constitution. Article 2 Section 3; Article 3 Section 3 clauses 1,2; Amendment 5; or Amendment 13 section 1,2
Requirement: Prepare an 8-10 minute oration by selection of one of the topics listed above. If interested see Ms. Murphy for details on each topic.

Elks Foundation Scholarships
Eligibility: Any high school senior who is a US citizen is eligible, has exhibited leadership and community service, scholastic rating of 90% or better, and a relative standing in the upper 5% of the class. 
Award: (500) awards nationally ranging from $1,000-$15,000 each. The 4 top rated applications in Kansas will be submitted for Final National Judging (2 Boys and 2 Girls) The State of Kansas awards 38 other students with a $600 one-time scholarship to use for their education.
Application: Very lengthy and demanding.  You will want to start the process early!!! See Ms. Murphy for Details!!

Sam Walton Community Scholarship (Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club)
Scholarship is available on-line from November 1st through January 12th, 2008. High school seniors need to logon to www.walmartfoundation.org for more information. These students will apply for the Sam Walton Community Scholarship on-line at www.scholarshipadministrators.net  Applicants must use the access code (SWCS) to complete the application—THERE ARE NO PAPER APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE!
DEADLINE: January 12th, See Ms. Murphy for further information.
Amount: Non-renewable $1,000 for 1st year of undergraduate study at accredited college or university
Eligible: HS Senior graduate and you may not be a Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club associate, or the child of an associate.

National Honor Society Scholarship
Each NHS (National Honor Society) chapter may nominate two seniors for this scholarship.  Nominees must be able to demonstrate on their applications that they possess outstanding character, scholarship, service, and leadership.

Rural Telephone Service/Nex-Tech Scholarship
Any high school senior whose parent or legal guardian subscribes to Rural Telephone/Nex-Tech local telephone service is eligible to apply.

Lang Diesel Scholarship
Amount: they will offer up to (5) $2,000 scholarships to deserving student going into diesel tech.
Recipients are given $500/year of school for 2 years and $1,000 upon graduation. In
Exchange for this scholarship, the recipient will be given 2 years of employment at one of the five stores; Hays, Smith Center, Colby, Ellinwood or Sabetha. There will be only one recipient per store, per year.

***NEW INFORMATION***FRED Scholarship
The Foundation for Rural Education and Development awards scholarships to rural America's best and brightest students.  Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500 and are funded bye the FRED Scholarship Endowment and by donations to the FRED Annual Giving Campaign.

US Bank Scholarships
U.S. Bank will award up to 30 ($1,000) scholarships to seniors planning to attend 2-yr or 4-yr college full time next fall. Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process.
Students can apply online by visiting the Web site at www.usbank.com/studentbanking 

Wells Fargo CollegeSTEPS Scholarship Sweepstakes
Wells Fargo will give away 100 scholarships of $1000 each for college or technical training. Winners are chosen through random monthly drawings from October through May. To register students simply need to log on to www.wellsfargo.com/collegesteps  By doing so students are registered for the drawings and they will receive monthly e-postcards with helpful college prep information. The program is completely free and your name and information does not get sold out to other companies.

Robert C Byrd Scholarship
Eligibility: 32 ACT score or higher, demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and show the promise of continued academic success
Application: available from Ms. Murphy
Deadline: February 5th, 2008 (latest ACT score used is from the December test)
 

Interested in being a manager for sports team or becoming an Athletic Trainer?  Check out the following schools that are offering scholarships for this opportunity.

Highland Community College Athletic Training Scholarships
Eligibility: Students with a high interest in Athletic Training.
Criteria: Responsible, Dependable, and Self-Motivated students are what they are looking for.
Amount: Tuition and books scholarship
Application: Nomination made by Ms. Murphy based on extreme interest in Highland and Athletic Training. Highland will make the final decision.

Barton County Community College (Great Bend)
** They are looking for students interested in pursuing Athletic Training or Sports Medicine Degrees. Students can receive tuition and books scholarships. Each year 18-20 students, including returning sophomores, are selected to join the Athletic Training Staff. If selected, you will receive the books and tuition scholarship, as long as you are enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours and have an overall GPA of 2.0. See Ms. Murphy for more details.

Barton County Community College Academic Scholarships
Applying for Academic Scholarships to BCCC is very simple.  Students simply fill out the Academic Scholarship Application portion of the Application for Admission.  The Scholarships are awarded based of the higher of the GPA or ACT score.  The scholarship is available for 6 full-time semesters and will annually renew with the student's most current Barton GPA.
Applications are accepted November 15th, 2007 through April 15th, 2008. 
Deadline:  April 15th, 2008.

Eligibility: attend Colby, strong Academics, (ACT 22 or higher), strong character, be recommended by Ms. Murphy. Interview process between you and Colby President and selected faculty.
Amount: $1,500 for two years as long as a 3.0GPA is maintained
Application: See Ms. Murphy; one NHS senior can be submitted and you must show me a strong interest in actually attending Colby.
Deadline: January 10th (this is when I have to have the nomination in. Student will have additional requirements: letter of application, resume, copy of ACT scores, transcript

Eligibility: Be a 2008 High School Graduate, Complete Scholarship Application, and set-up and go to a campus visit.  All scholarships are based on a 2.5 or higher GPA

Kansas Board of Regents Vocational Education Scholarship
Eligibility: Take the Vocational Test at NCK in Hays
Test Date: March 1st (deadline is Feb.4th)
Test Fee: $10.00 payable to Kansas State University
Award: Approximately 240 scholarships depending on state funds. Applicants are ranked by test score. Recipients will receive $500 stipends for the 08-09 academic year.

Pinnacle Career Institute Scholarship
Each Kansas high school may select two deserving seniors to receive a $2,000 scholarship to be used to attend PCI-Lawrence. Any student wishing to apply for the PCI Scholarship should contact the Counseling Office to be considered. Programs available at PCI include: (Massage Therapy, Medical Asst., Medical Office Asst., Business Office Administrator). Please notify Ms. Murphy ASAP. Natoma High School will establish December 15th as the cut-off date for notification of your interest in this program/application.
