comeback
and forced the Tigers into overtime. Who ever thought
that the crowds had been loud in previous games had
defiantly not known the Natoma Tigers who won the overtime
and advanced to state.
With a police escort through Plainville, the Tigers went
to their soon to be last game against Centralia, who was
then 23-1, and who had gone to state several times over the
past years. This was the way the game looked like. The
Tigers lost by twenty points 66-46, and were eliminated in
the first round on Thursday, March 8th, 2007. Hays Daily
News lead paginator/copy editor Nick Schwien writes in his
editorial, “This year’s team prided itself on hard work, and
the team also instilled a renewed sense of pride in the
community located in western Osborne County.” He wrote later
in his article, “Even when the game was decided late, the
crowd – and team – never gave up.”
Senior Tyler Masters looked back on this year’s
basketball season and said, “This team has been working
towards this goal for 3 years now, and it will be an
experience we’ll never forget.”
The Tigers have achieved something of what many other teams just
dream. They have gone to state and this is the first time in
three decades. The Tigers belong to the Top Eight 1A schools
in the state of Kansas. As the shirts from the United
National Bank of Natoma says, “The Tigers are back.” |
This year may have
possibly been the greatest season for the Natoma Basketball
Boys’ Team in over thirty years. It was 1975, over thirty
years ago, since the Tigers went to state, and this year the
spirit of John Locke has infected not only the team, but the
whole area.
The boys, along with their coaches Jeff Crawford and Ben
Labertew, have achieved very high goals. The Tigers, who
were 17-3 before Regionals, played a strong season. At
Regionals, the Tigers placed second to Sylvan who had the
home court advantage.
This allowed the Tigers to play their sub-state games in
Hays, where the Tigers presented themselves in best form.
The first game was against Quinter. The Tigers won easily,
but with a few difficulties in the fourth quarter. This
brought the Natoma Fans back on Saturday to the sub-state
final against Kensington. The Tigers were ahead by seven
points in the last minute when the undefeated Goldbugs had a

his sports photography, and Hachmeister received an
honorable mention for her feature photography and first
place in her layout design. “I was really surprised that I
was able to succeed, but it is nice to see that it paid off
to take lots of pictures,” commented Mehlwitz on his recent
success.
Many in the class also competed in categories that took place on
location. They entered in editorial cartoon, feature
writing, editing, cutlines, newspaper sports writing,
editorial writing and news writing. In these categories
McNeal received first place in cutline writing and received
an honorable mention in newspaper sports writing, and Casey
received third place in feature writing.
All students that placed or received honorable mentions in their
events will have the opportunity to compete at the state
level. “My journalism class made me proud at regionals.
Those students who get to go to state will represent our
school well,” stated Journalism Advisor Shari Paget on the
outcome of regionals. State journalism contest will take
place in Lawrence this year at Kansas University on May 5th. |

On Thursday, February 23, 2007 the Natoma High School
Journalism staff attended the regional Journalism
competition in Hays at the Holiday Inn. Those attending were
Seniors Cambria Eickhoff and Ha Truong, Juniors David
Elliott, Matthias Mehlwitz, Morgan McNeal and Rebekah
Hachmeister, Freshmen Eastin Casey and Sandra Richmond, and
Sponsor Shari Paget.
Before attending, many of the staff members were busy at work
preparing all carry-in entries. They perfected
advertisements, layouts, headlines and pictures. Hard work
paid off for many when the judges’ results came in. Richmond
received an honorable mention for her headline project,
